South Africa - A World Cup Like No Other!

During 2010, after a 24+ hour journey and three layovers (Mexico City, Amsterdam, Nairobi), Diego arrived to Johannesburg, South Africa for what would be one of his most memorable trips.

South Africa and Mexico were set for a very interesting opening match. Diego arrived just in time for the game (with a couple hours to spare). He managed to take a ride to the game with a local he met on the street, sold an extra ticket to an Algerian fan and it that weren't memorable enough, he took a ride back to his hotel in the back of a police car! The match was forgettable (a boring 1-1) but the first day was certainly not!

After a few days, Joel (Diego's groomsman) joined Diego in South Africa and together they went on a road trip following the Mexican national team. With no cell phone coverage, Google Maps or a GPS (yes, they declined a GPS in the rental car), Diego and Joel did a pretty good job moving around South Africa, while driving on the left side of the road. Ignoring the fact that they have 8 unpaid traffic tickets in South Africa and are unlikely to return, their driving was flawless!

The Mexican national team gave an OK performance, getting kicked out by Argentina during the round of 16. It was a heartbreaking match, with Argentina getting their first goal in a more than evident offside. But at the end they were the better team, and Joel and Diego packed their bags and headed home with a lot of new friends and countless stories! Oh and also, Joel snapped a photo of him and Miroslav Klose who is now the top scorer of all time in world cups with 16 goals in 4 world cups!
